TWAS March 23

Hello Everyone,

I hope all of your little ones are loving the first day of their much deserved break!!!

I'm sorry to report that we were so busy yesterday that there wasn't time to get everyone's quotes.  I'll do my best to sum up the details with a short and sweet post.

Artist of the week: In the week following spring break, we will be exploring a variety of impactful artists with an Indigenous background.  This includes, but is not limited to:  Robbie Robertson and The Band, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and the Link Wray. (Ms. Thomas)

Language Arts:

  • Most of the first draft monster narratives are complete so we focused on writer's workshops.
    • thesaurus day — this was soooo much fun.  Ask your little one about the 5 words they were able to replace.  We will definitely be doing more of this workshop!
    • make the words so descriptive that it sounds like poetry (re-write a section of the story with a friend)
  • Our work with poetry continues . . .
    • descriptive sense of smell words
    • re-creating smell memories/experiences
  • Spelling Work: "tion" and "qu"
Math:
  • subtraction math problems
  • basic math drills (subtraction/addition) and DEAC practice
  • addition/subtraction 2 digit with algorithm
  • making snowshoes with Mr. Sonnenberg
Science:
  • We began our unit on liquids; ask your little ones to explain these fun experiments
      • magic penny (surface tension)
      • the 'Great Viscosity Race' (viscosity/flow)
      • Density Tower made from liquids in this order:  honey, whole milk; dish soap; water, vegetable oil, rubbing alcohol (density)
Social Studies:
  • Building communities
  • Team building circle work/social expectations
Art:
  • Perspective
  • Distance in scenes
  • Creating an air ballon picture that depicts them arriving.  We used water colors, pastels, pencil crayons, markers and wax crayons.  I don't have a picture as we will continuing our work with them after the break.
Buddies:
  • Teaching our grade 1 buddies how to log in and use Raz Kids

Special Guest:
  • Haley Irwin, Women's Team Canada Hockey, brought in, taught us about and let us all hold her 2 gold and 1 silver metals!
That's it and that's all (probably not but I'll let your little one fill you in on the rest) so I will leave you with a math problem of the week and wish you all the very best over the break!!

Mrs. McArthur

Every day over spring break (11 days) I want to wear three different hats.  I already have 10 hats how many more to I need to buy?
