TWAS sept.29

Hello Everyone,

We hope you have had a great week!

This morning we started a personalized TWAS (this week at school).  The children have learned how to create a TWAS google document in their CBE GoogleDrive accounts and have chosen a person (or people) that they live with to begin a letter correspondence.  In this letter the children share about their week at school, and then request a reply back from the reader.  Please write all replies directly beneath the letter so that your child can keep a running record of the year's correspondence, as a keepsake.  There are two ways to do this: log in to your child's account and type directly on the same document; have the child "share" the document with you and then you can access the letter from your own account (because the students' accounts are CBE secured, they won't always share so this second option may not be possible for some of you).

Taped into the communication folders is a copy of each child's Google Drive log in information; please don't hesitate to give me a call or stop in if you would like some assistance.

It did take a while getting our documents set up so some of the letters are very short, but I know that any reply would be very much appreciated by your little ones.

This week's language arts topic was generosity.  In addition to writing about and making story connections to this topic, the students put on some fantastic skits.  It is amazing to see how well they work together in assigned groups in the development and performance of these little shows, and likewise I am always impressed with their 'audience' skills.  They are respectful and extremely supportive of one another.  Because of this everyone always chooses to perform and I am seeing more and more students take risks in their acting, and all are working to project their voices.  It is a lot of fun and initiates a lot of great discussion.

In math this week, we continued to look at problems, move through math stations and work with patterns.  The children are being encouraged to explore pattern creations using a variety of mediums and to push themselves to use two or more attributes per pattern. I have attached images of some of this week's fun creations.

Our science projects are starting to come together.  All students have a chosen creature and are beginning to create their own personal 'critter' inquiry booklets.  If your child's creature happens to live in our area, and is still out hopping/flying about, perhaps your child can observe his/her chosen creature in its natural habitat and even get a picture for the learning journey part of the booklet.

In addition to all of our academics, we definitely got our share of fitness in this week, training for and then running in the Terry Fox run.  Thank you to everyone who was able to come out and cheer us on.  We had a lot of fun and the run was a great success.

In closing, I would like to send a huge shout out to every member of our class for everything they do to make our learning space so wonderful.  I rarely, if ever, have to pick up after the students at the end of the day.  The children take great care with our class materials.  The lunch supervisors claim that "room 73 students" are true leaders in the lunch room because they "consistently demonstrate respectful, kind behaviour, eat up their lunches and use indoor talking voices."  The students are generous and inclusive with each other, but most importantly of all they take time to notice these qualities in one another.  Today our random act of kindness box was filled with recognitions of the kindness of others and already, only one month in, our Circle of Courage is almost full.  My favourite part though, is that we laugh a lot — learning with this crew is a lot of fun!

I hope you all enjoy another beautiful fall weekend.

All the very best,

Mrs. McArthur
