TWAS

Hello Everyone,

Wow what a wild, fast and wonderful week!  The days flew by and already the children are in the thick of leaning.  One of us stated, at the beginning of TWAS, "Mrs. McArthur what can we even write about; we've only been here four days," and then they proceeded to fill up three pages with the week's events.  So here is some of what was on those pages:

We began the week with activities and discussions that focused on belonging.  Where we see it, why we need it, when we feel it, when we don't and why it is so important in our class and out in the community. We also talked a bit about our class rule:  kindness.  I will let them explain why we only need one rule, how everything (even signing out for the bathroom) relates back to kindness. On this path we also set up our Circle of Courage and began our recognition of Random Acts of Kindness, of which we saw many this week.

Additionally we dove right in to our language arts, math, inquiry, art, music and gym. We've started our language arts with short written reflections such as "I am awesome because," vowel hunts (letter a this week) and sentence building with word wall 'a' words.  We also re-visited our practice of making connections and predictions as we read and are read to, while enjoying some fun stories.

In math we worked with Joe Boaler's inspirational math series, finding patterns, 'building a math brain' and participating in some fun math activities, like coloured maze building. We also worked on our basic math facts with math toss and addition bingo.

Ms. Boutiliere's class joined us as Ms. Boutilier taught us how to document our life-long learning journey using fun symbols and little tricks to help tell a story using images and words. It would be great if families are able to have a conversation about the different types of learning journeys that they have experienced. We will be continuing with this theme in social studies as the students work on "all about me" projects. One of the ways in which we began this exploration was creating Pablo Picasso self portraits — they are incredible!!

Ms. Thomas got us off to a fun start in music this week. We did a lot of dancing while learning about best learning practices during music times.  We also practiced our Cranston Anthem, as we had our first assembly on Thursday.  We were also treated to a wonderful welcome back snack.  Thank you so much parent council and volunteers who brought the snacks to all of the classes.

Ms. MacMillan and Ms. Sedgewick got us off to a fun start in gym with lots of movement, in and outside.

Oh yes, and we practiced our emergency procedures  . . . it's been busy but (I hope the children agree) it has been fun!

Below are a couple of pictures from our first week.  James and Caeden are wearing orange pinnies because they were this week's classroom peace ambassadors.  They were out, during lunch recess, patrolling for anyone who may have been feeling lonely, needed help finding a supervisor or may have forgotten play-safe choices. We were very impressed with the kindness they showed while taking on this task.  They were extremely helpful and committed to their task.  Thanks so much boys!
The second picture is of Noah, Emily and Malika celebrating Malika's AWESOME t-shirt; we love the message "If you think you can; you can!"

I hope you all have a wonderful and restful weekend and I'll look forward to seeing those smiling faces Monday morning!

Mrs. McArthur
