TWAS October 20

Hello Everyone,

Happy Friday!

It was wonderful to see so many of you last night.  The children were very excited to show off and share their Family Mail Centers, so it was fantastic that Cranston literacy night was able to find a spot in so many of your busy family schedules! I hope that you were able to pull some useful information from some of the other centers as well.  For all who were unable to make it, your children built and brought home a "family mail center" that they made.  The idea is that, by writing and receiving family notes, the children have an opportunity to build on and practice their literacy in a fun and purposeful way.  They are encouraged to be as creative as possible.  At the end of this post is a poster that explains how this activity connects to Alberta Ed program of studies and report card STEMS.

This week the children put on some brilliant performances of The Three Little Pigs. They performed in groups of 4 in the hub with big booming voices, in front of the class. They were given very little time to prepare and had to work exceedingly well in their groups to pull this off, and wow did they ever do well. Everyone performed, and each of this children is becoming an excellent storyteller. We are beginning to transfer this skill over to Reader's Theatre in the 'read to group' portion of our Daily 5.  A couple groups feel that they might even be able to perform in one of our upcoming assemblies.

The children are working on applying math language to math activities, particularly the practice of explaining what is going on in those math brains of theirs.  This week's challenge was to create increasing patterns, circle the core, write out the attributes and explain the pattern rule . . . we are still working on this . . . ,but if you have time see if your little one can work through this challenge at home, for fun.

Our family trees are looking great and should be hung next week.  I'm hoping they'll be on next week's blog for you to enjoy.  We continue to research our critters, and are finding it trickier that expected to explain 'how' we know what we do about our creature's habitat.

The children filled our days will endless insightful observations, acts of kindness and laughter. They are working so hard and so well, in and out of the classroom. This week they were rewarded with a pizza party for being lunchroom leaders.  They have proved to the rest of the grade 1's and 2's that it is possible to eat all of your lunch while chatting respectfully to your table group, and also to turn voices off when there is an announcement.  I am very proud of them; pizza details to follow!

A message from Ms. Thomas in music:

Artist of the Week:

Michael Jackson

In the spirit of Halloween, the “King of Pop” will be our artist of the week. Starting his career in the 1960s, Michael Jackson was a vital member of his family’s pop group, “The Jackson 5”. Continuing his career with Motown Records, MJ went solo in the 1970s, eventually leading us to his era of greatness in the 80s. We will be listening to some of his greatest hits including: I Want You Back, ABC, Billie Jean, and of course, Thriller. Students will also get a taste of the impact he made on dance culture.

Have a wonderful weekend ~

Until Monday,

Mrs. McArthur
