TWAS October 6

Hello Everyone,

I hope you have had a great week, and that this giant harvest moon hasn't been shaking things up too much in your homes; I can't confirm the correlation but just saying . . . it has been a little extra chatty around here!

The children are very excited about the long weekend.  There has been a lot of talk about turkey dinners and family visits.  I have attached some beautiful artwork, and thoughtful messages of thanks, that your little ones created after discussions about harvest and 'thankfulness.'

It was also a very exciting week in gym as the parachute was out and lots of fun teamwork games were played.

In math the children were presented with some challenging pattern tasks, such as the following:  You have 6 red blocks, 3 blue blocks, 3 green blocks and 3 orange blocks.  Create a pattern where the core repeats three times and no blocks are left over.  I was extremely impressed with demonstrations of fantastic teamwork and very impressive results.  I have attached one particularly creative design.

This week in language arts we focused on grade 2 writing expectations: using appropriate upper case and lower case letters; end of sentence punctuation; writing in full sentences; keeping our letters on the lines; using finger spaces between words; trying to use juicy words.  The children have each been given a rubric that they can use to help them review their writing.

We also created brain pockets this week as tools to help us with our writing.  See if your little one can remember the three pockets and examples to fill them (memory/facts/imagination).

Inquiry, this week, focused on the family tree and the story of our names.  We shared some examples and then the students partnered up with our buddy class and brainstormed some ideas about what they already know about their names and family.  We heard some fantastic stories!!  We will begin to work with this a little more next week so if you have not already done so, this weekend would be a great time to get some ideas down on the "story of me" sheets that went home this week.  We have asked that the children bring those sheets back on Tuesday.

Thank you to those of you who were able to get the Club Friday forms filled out and returned (the blue sheet).  I have been able to input a lot of your children's choices already.

Please be sure to read your child's TWAS letter.  They are on the same google document page as last week and so many were THRILLED to read your responses.  Again if you are having trouble finding it or logging in please give me a call or drop in next week; I'm happy to help.

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving,

All the very best,

Mrs. McArthur
