TWAS January 12th

Hello Everyone,

I hope 2018 is off to a good start for everyone! So far it is a great year for us in 73.  All of the children have settled back into their routines beautifully and everyone seems to be enjoying the fresh start.

We have lots of fun new beginnings on the go!

We are starting our narrative writing unit and are beginning in the place of researchers:  what do good writers do?  How do they make their characters interesting?  What types of problems do we see in our favourite stories. The students are starting to work on character development by fostering relationships with their monster characters.  We are having fun learning about our monsters' routines, vices, hobbies and New Year's resolutions.  We are also studying parts of story. Next week we will be looking at how character traits feed plot.  We have also begun a new unit on spelling rules.

In math we are working with math stories and finding math in our environment.  The children designed and created math story comic strips on paper templates— so much fun. What creative minds and great math! We are also continuing with math problems.  If you have the time this weekend, have your child show you how they worked through his was one:

Zurie and Golden both went to the ocean.
Golden found 8 crabs, 3 starfish, 2 sand dollars and 1 octopus.  Zurie found 1 less sea creature than Golden did.  How many creatures did Zurie find?  If she found the same types of creatures as Golden did, how many of each might she have found?

In science this week we began our very exciting unit on magnetism.  There are six inquiry based stations;  I will let your child explain her/his discoveries so far.

In social studies we analyzed homes from around the world and discussed what different designs and structures tell us about the people who live in them, and the communities where those houses exists.  We discussed how geography, culture and tradition contribute to the designs of homes.  The students then designed and built homes and have colour-coded the rooms to express what homes provide us with.  They are spectacular.  We will be finished the 'legends' that go with on Monday/Tuesday so I will post pictures then.

We had two very special buddy class experiences this week.  One was with our grade 1 little buddies. We helped them read and took writer research notes about character, main idea and story problems while they were reading to us.  Our second buddy experience was with Ms. Quilley's grade 3 class.  They came in taught us how to use the Pixton comic program and helped us to create really cool on-line math comics.   This amazing program will also be fantastic for learning about and working with character development and creative plot summaries.

Finally (though I'm sure I'm missing a ton) we started our new Club Friday clubs.  Everyone said they had a great time and it sounded like there were lots of great experiences (Lincoln I found the beautiful crocheting that you made for me :) )

I will sign off with Ms. Thomas' music message of the week and wish everyone a warm and wonderful weekend.  See you Monday!

Artist of the Week

The Beach Boys:

The Beach Boys are a most commonly known for pioneering the “California Sound”, otherwise known as the surf rock sub genre. Through the 60s, The Beach Boys evolved from a “youth-culture” themed pop group, to being highly sophisticated rock innovators with critically acclaimed albums like “Pet Sounds”.
