TWAS January 19
Hello 73 families,
I hope that everyone is doing well and you all are starting to enjoy a bit more sun as our days slowly begin to get a little longer :)
It's been a great week here at Cranston. We had an unexpected practice lockdown yesterday and all of the children did extremely well.
Please have a look in your child's blue folder as the field trip permission slips went home with them today. We will be needing a few volunteers so if you are able, please let me know and I will send those forms home as well.
We've had a number of guests join us. Mr. Logan Sonnenberg is a Bachelor of Education student from the Mount Royal University who is joining us Tuesday mornings for his first year practicum. The children loved having him with us this week, and are looking forward to working with him over the next 10 weeks. As a spelling bonus, Ms. Patton is joining us for two twenty minute periods each week for word work. We learned and played some fun word wall games: mind reader, 20 questions and walk the plank. We love Ms. Patton and are so lucky that she is able to fit us in to her very busy schedule! Additionally it is our turn to work with Ms. Brace, our schools' curriculum support teacher; she is joining us for inquiry Monday and Tuesday afternoons. This is especially exciting as her background is in cultural anthropology and offers a lot of enrichment to our study of belongings/artifacts.
This week's artifact was a CN rail lantern. In addition to wondering, reflecting, and discussing the significance of this object, the children learned the basics of sketching to help them document what they see as we move forward with our artifact/belonging work. We are waiting for our artifact gloves to arrive (hopefully early next week) so that we can begin our work with the belongings that the children have brought in (it would be great if each of the child could have their own belonging so if you are unsure of how to help your child decide on an object please send me an email; I'm happy to help with some ideas).
This week's Language Arts focus has been character development and character conflict (internal/external) research. The students have created a number of character maps, hard copy and with Pixton comics, and are becoming very skilled at picking out the personality traits and particular characteristics that make for interesting characters.
Math this week involved a lot of calculating. We are continuing to work on basic math fact recall, and have begun to work with regrouping in 2 digit addition. This week's math problems combined multiple math skills and reading comprehension and were particularly tricky because they required particular attention to what the questions are asking. Their calculations helped them work toward the answers . . . but were not the answers themselves. If time permits, have your little one explain how they worked through the following problem:

Camilla, Coco and Caeden are all playing cards. They are holding three cards each.
Camilla has a 4 of clubs, 5 of hearts, and a 2 of diamonds.
Coco has an 8 of spades, a 9 of hearts and a 3 of diamonds.
Caeden, has a 6 of hearts, a 7 of clubs and a jack.
Whose cards, when added together, has the largest sum? Whose cards, when added together has a sum that has a 3 in the ones place? Whose cards, when added together, has a sum that is even?
Science, for this month and into February, is all about magnets. Currently we are learning about magnetic north, why compasses work, and talked about some of the metals that are magnetic. The children are continuing to enjoy their magnetic inquiry stations.
I've posted the beautiful 'A home is a great place for: ' art below — enjoy!
I'll let Ms. Thomas have the last word with her artist of the week info, and wish you all a wonderful weekend!
Shania Twain:
This upcoming week brings us our second female and first country artist — Shania Twain! In the 1990’s, the Canadian singer received commercial success with her country album “The Woman In Me”. She then began to blend genres with her pop-country album “Come On Over”. We will be exploring the genre-specific instruments, themes, and patterns heard in the first album.
