TWAS February 2

Hello Team 73,

I hope you all have managed to stay warm during this very cold week.  On a warmer note we learned today, from Balzac Billy, that it will be an early spring, which was music to our collective ears in room 73 :)

It has been a wonderful week.  Our cookie baking was a wonderful success (thank you thank you thank you volunteers) that was very much appreciated by our field trip hosts.  They put out a special thank you to Cranston school with a picture of our baking and card, on their school facebook page.

The field trip itself was incredible.  It was not easy getting those little ones to leave and they have been begging to go back.  While it was a special treat to be invited (there are only a few classes a year that are able to go) we are hoping to do some work with Niitsitapi in some other ways . . . more on that to come.
Your children are working on some reflective slides about their visit.  They can show you what they have started on Google Slides, and should be able to tell you some interesting stories about "Napi" the trickster and some of the belongings that they enjoyed learning about.  The design of the building, with some very special rooms, was also much loved by the children.

This week in language arts we are starting to put our parts of story planning together, and are focusing on how we can solve our monsters' problems in ways that are interesting, engaging, creative and also make sense (align with the characters' traits).

I learned some fun new math games at "teacher math school" Tuesday night and the children are finding a couple of them to be fun energizers, time fillers while waiting in line, or DEAC exercises.  Ask them to teach you "I love Math" or " Over Under."  If time permits you may also want to ask them to show you how they solved the following math problem:

Talking Circle

lincoln, Malika and Sophia were sitting in a talking circle with 17 other people.  Everyone shared the same amount of times.  There were 60 shares. How many times did Lincoln, Malika and Sophia each share?

We finished our science magnets stations and were treated to a very special magnet lesson by Caeden's mom. Caeden generously agreed to bring in his magnet kit from home and we were able predict and play with the many fun things that those magnets could do, while adding to our knowledge about the properties of magnets. Thank you so much Ms. Scobie!

I will let your little ones share the many more details of our week with you (conversation starters could include Club Friday, Mission Impossible, drawing, our student teacher), and will leave you with warm wishes for a restful and fun weekend, and Ms. Thomas's artist of the week:

Artist of the Week

Queen:

Piggybacking on last weeks influential artist of the 70s, this week we will be exploring one of that bands that David Bowie collaborated most successfully with. Queen was an important pop-rock/progressive rock band of the 1970s, and created some of the world’s most favorite sing-along anthems. At the end of the week, we will take a look at “Under Pressure” in order to make a connection with David Bowie.
