TWAS February 9th

Hello Everyone,

I hope you've all had a good week :)

 Probably most important on the list is that this Monday is winter sports day so please send your children to school with snow-pants/boots mittens and toques as we'll be outside all afternoon. 

 Also, swimming dates are in:  April 16 - 20 10:45 - 11:30.

 The students worked very hard on their artifact writing over the last few days: what they see, think, and wonder when they look at belonging and what that 'seeing, thinking and wondering' teaches us about ourselves.  If you have time next week pop in and have a look at the projects.  The writing and sketches are on our bulletin outside of the classroom, and they are definitely worth checking out.  Great work 73 :)

 This week we did quite a bit of work with difference and 2 digit numbers.  If you have a deck of cards at home have your little one show you the four card flip game, making greatest and least with the four cards and then, if comfortable, taking on the extra challenge of finding the difference between the two numbers.  Here are also a couple of the math problems that we worked on:
Golden, Maksim and Sophia are building a snow fort.  It is a snow-fort castle that has 5 rooms and 2 balconies. It is SPECTACULAR! Like all good snow forts, their snow fort has a good defense.  It has snowballs. If Golden, Maksim and Sophia all built the same number of snowballs,and all together there are 24 snowballs then  how many snowballs did Sophia make?

I have 27 stickers.  Xander has 49 stickers.  What is the difference between the amount of stickers we have?

In socials we are recreating the Cranston community. If you have time take a tour and point out some of the landmarks so that your son or daughter can add them into his or her 3D map next week.  

Art . . . well you'll find out all about that on Wednesday!

There has been a lot of talk about the Olympics in phys-ed; if the opportunity presents, I'm sure the children would love to watch some of the events.  Our class has some cool connections!

Because next week is extra short (no school Thursday or Friday) Ms. Thomas has not forwarded an artist of week.

Hello Everyone, I hope you are all off to a wonderful weekend start! It was lovely to meet with so many families over the last week during our community walk, picnic and at 'meet the teacher.' As the children settle into their routines we are finding our days whizzing by and the children's morning endurance seems to be strengthening daily. We will start rotating through math stations next week so we spent quite a bit of time working with math problems, as they tend to be the math station that requires the most "mastery" (mastery was our circle of courage focus this week; please ask your little one to explain his/her understanding of this tricky concept). The children are learning to be patient with themselves as they learn the skill of breaking down math problems and using their tools to work with the information they are given. Hello Everyone, Wow what a wild, fast and wonderful week!  The days flew by and already the children are in the thick of leaning.  One of us stated, at the beginning of TWAS, "Mrs. McArthur what can we even write about; we've only been here four days," and then they proceeded to fill up three pages with the week's events.  So here is some of what was on those pages: We began the week with activities and discussions that focused on belonging.  Where we see it, why we need it, when we feel it, when we don't and why it is so important in our class and out in the community. We also talked a bit about our class rule:  kindness.  I will let them explain why we only need one rule, how everything (even signing out for the bathroom) relates back to kindness. On this path we also set up our Circle of Courage and began our recognition of Random Acts of Kindness, of which we saw many this week. TWAS November 18th

Hello Families, It was great to see so many of you coming together to enjoy family movie night last night. The children were very excited; what a wonderful social event.  It is so important that the school is a part of the wider community so thank you so much for making that happen! I can't wait to hear all about it in the "over the weekend" reflections Monday morning :) I hope the children have been sharing their painting experiences with you.  As you probably know, we have been learning about colour in science, so for our Thursday art the children created a colour wheel.  Here's the thing, they were given only the three primary colours (tempera paint), 1 paint brush, a bowl of water, a napkin, a cleaning cloth to share with 2 friends and a colour wheel template.  They had to create all of the secondary and tertiary colours by blending with only those materials.  I thought that this was going to be extremely challenging (it was for me when I made the exempl...
