TWAS January 26

Hello Everyone, It was so nice to be able to touch base with so many of you over the last couple of days at conferences.  Fifteen minutes is a very short time so please feel free to call or schedule another meeting if you are wanting to spend a little more time discussing your child's learning.  Likewise, for any families who were not able to meet because of time conflicts, I would be more than happy to schedule a meeting for a time that better suits your schedule. We have started to work with the wonderful belongings that the students are bringing in, and really enjoyed Ms. Brace's extremely cool, very old, belonging that really got us "Seeing, Thinking and Wondering." We are also applying our new sketching skills and trying to visually capture what we see.  Some very impressive work is happening here :) Our magnet work continues to be a favourite as the children work through the different stations conducting their experiments.  With each new station that they

Hello 73 families, I hope that everyone is doing well and you all are starting to enjoy a bit more sun as our days slowly begin to get a little longer :) It's been a great week here at Cranston.  We had an unexpected practice lockdown yesterday and all of the children did extremely well. Please have a look in your child's blue folder as the field trip permission slips went home with them today.  We will be needing a few volunteers so if you are able, please let me know and I will send those forms home as well. We've had a number of guests join us.  Mr. Logan Sonnenberg is a Bachelor of Education student from the Mount Royal University who is joining us Tuesday mornings for his first year practicum. The children loved having him with us this week, and are looking forward to working with him over the next 10 weeks.  As a spelling bonus, Ms. Patton is joining us for two twenty minute periods each week for word work. We learned and played some fun word wall games: mind

Gymnastics safety

Hello Everyone, Here is a copy of the gymnastics safety list as provided from the Phys-ed team: We have begun our gymnastic unit in our regularly scheduled physical education classes. This unit lasts until the first week of February. To begin this unit, we review safety procedures with each class. When participating in gymnastics we ask students to be dressed and prepared to participate. We ask you to consider the following: •     Clothing that allows freedom of movement (no special uniforms or outfits are required – sweats and a t-shirt work best).
 •     Loose fitting/baggy clothing may get caught on equipment when climbing.
 •     Tucking shirts in may help to prevent an accident.
 •     All jewelry that could get caught on equipment should be removed (left in classrooms or left at home). e.g. watches, rings, necklaces, etc
 •     Students with long hair should have their hair tied back. Tying hair back with elastics (scrunchies) is recommended.

TWAS January 12th

Hello Everyone, I hope 2018 is off to a good start for everyone! So far it is a great year for us in 73.  All of the children have settled back into their routines beautifully and everyone seems to be enjoying the fresh start. We have lots of fun new beginnings on the go! We are starting our narrative writing unit and are beginning in the place of researchers:  what do good writers do?  How do they make their characters interesting?  What types of problems do we see in our favourite stories. The students are starting to work on character development by fostering relationships with their monster characters.  We are having fun learning about our monsters' routines, vices, hobbies and New Year's resolutions.  We are also studying parts of story. Next week we will be looking at how character traits feed plot.  We have also begun a new unit on spelling rules.  In math we are working with math stories and finding math in our environment.  The children designed and created mat
